A very big “Thank You” to all who have supported The Walk with your very generous sponsorship. Your money will go a long way to helping Anglesey’s vulnerable young people, and you will be able hear more about this through our website in due course.

Anglesey’s High Sheriff, Professor Robin Grove-White, completed his 125-mile fund-raising trek around the Anglesey Coastal Footpath with a call for further support for the campaign on behalf of the island’s young unemployed.

The 71-year-old, formerly Chairman of Greenpeace UK and Director of Lancaster University’s Centre for the Study of Environmental Change, said the 15-day walk had been ‘an exhilarating experience’. He was accompanied by his artist wife, Helen. More than 600 individuals and groups joined them at various stages of ‘The Walk’, over the last two weeks of March. These included Albert Owen MP, Ieuan Wyn Jones AM, several Judges, supporters, friends, numerous voluntary organisations and groups of unemployed young people.

“The public response has already been terrific. We are two-thirds of the way to our target of £25,000, to enable us to fund third sector initiatives to help the island’s young people. I’d like to thank the many folk who have supported us in what’s a real community initiative,” said Professor Grove-White.

The purpose of The Walk has been to draw attention to the problems now facing many young people on the island, and to raise funds for the local organisations who are able to create new opportunities for them and increase their self-confidence.

“More assistance is needed. During the course of ‘The Walk’, I’ve been struck by the contrasting experiences of people living in different parts of the island. Whilst a majority of us are leading comfortable lives taking advantage of Anglesey’s beautiful surroundings, there are worsening pockets of disadvantage in towns and villages where unemployment is most serious,” said Robin.

The High Sheriff’s charity Crimebeat, with expert advice, will allocate the funds to charities and other innovative bodies on the island that really understand the issues through their hands-on experience.

Facebook www.facebook.com/pages/The-Walk/176199905814097
and www.justgiving.com/theangleseywalk.

The High Sheriff is a 1000-year-old unpaid office, standing for justice and good citizenship within a county. It has strong historical links with the judiciary. A new High Sheriff is appointed by the Privy Council each year for every county in England and Wales.

The High Sheriff for Gwynedd (including Anglesey) 2011/12 was Professor Robin Grove-White, who lives at Brynddu in Llanfechell, Anglesey, formerly the residence of his ancestor, the celebrated eighteenth-century diarist, William Bulkeley.

Professor Robin Grove-White finished his term of office as The High Sheriff for Gwynedd (including Anglesey) on 31 March 2012, just as the walk was completed. He will continue to be involved in the High Sheriff’s charity Crimebeat.

“It is a pleasure to support the Sheriff of Anglesey and Gwynedd on his excellent project to walk the beautiful Island Coastal path and to raise money and the profile of young people. Robin is committed to helping our youth and other good causes, and with the walk is promoting the coastal treasures of the Isle of Anglesey. I wish him well and urge others to help and support Robin with his initiatives,” said Albert Owen MP.

His purpose is to raise funds and increase publicity in support of Anglesey’s vulnerable young people. He asks for your help.

Our communities face a growing problem. Around 24 per cent of Anglesey’s young people between the ages of 16 and 24, often without training or work experience, are unemployed. They need fresh opportunities, activities and encouragement at a time of mounting economic pressure across Wales.

This affects us all. The island’s harmony and social order are at stake, as well as the needs of the young people themselves.

The funds that The Walk raises will help the county’s voluntary organisations provide more opportunities for work experience, confidence-building activities and other practical initiatives. It’s time for all of us on Anglesey to contribute and share the responsibility. The matter’s too serious to be left to the authorities alone, at a time when their own budgets are shrinking.

With expert advice, the High Sheriff’s charity, Crimebeat, will allocate the funds raised to the local charities and other innovative bodies that really understand the issues through their hands-on experience.

A group of youngsters from Prestatyn who gave the grounds of a local Church a new lease of life did so with financial backing from Crimebeat.

Members of Clwb Hwyl Hwyr (the Late Fun Club), a youth club run through the medium of Welsh, was awarded £215 for the ‘Hon yw ein bro’/ This is our community’ project by the High Sheriffs Crimebeat fund.

Under the project, new life was breathed into the garden of the Nant Hall Church as volunteers, youngsters and church members took part in gardening and also re-vamped the area with new plants and pots. The outside of the church also benefited from a fresh coat of paint to the front doors and signage.

The overall aim of the project, which was born from discussions with the children, was to provide a platform for the young people accessing the Clwb Hwyl Hwyr to learn more about their community and to think of ways of improving it.

The project also sought to bring a sense of responsibility and ownership for the young people as they knew that the work would benefit the community.

The youngsters and volunteers worked alongside church members on a ‘workday’ where the individuals were split into two groups – one painting and the other working on the garden.

High Sheriff Lloyd FitzHugh recently visited the completed project. He said: “I was delighted to visit Clwb Hwyl Hwyr and commended the volunteers on the provision of the range of activities for, and the work done by the children of the Welsh speaking community around Prestatyn.”

A PRIMARY school recruited its own mini-army of anti-bully volunteers to “police” playtime breaks.

Dubbed the “playground pals”, 29 pupils at Ysgol Deganwy underwent months of special training from ChildLine to get the scheme up and running.

The mission of the youngsters, aged nine and 10, is to help make sure other pupils – from as young as four – enjoy a safe and happy play environment, free from bullying.

“It is all about encouraging friendship and playing together,” said the school’s head Dafydd Roberts, who staged a morning service to launch the playground pals project.

As well as support from ChildLine, with bi-lingual counselling centres in Swansea and Rhyl, it is being backed by Crimebeat and North Wales Police.

Mr Roberts added: “Their support has been paramount in helping us set up a project that will be ongoing and part of the schools anti-bullying strategy.

“The ‘pals’ are looking forward enthusiastically to their role in providing a safer, friendlier school environment at playtimes and lunchtime.”

ChildLine’s Hannah Mart said”Making sure children are safe is at the heart of our work and the Playground Pals is a great way of making sure children can ask for help if they need it.”

The pupils were handed a pounds 500 Crimebeat grant to help them cover the costs of the scheme.

Dave Evans of Crimebeat said: “We are delighted to be able to support such a worthwhile scheme, and it is wonderful to see so many positive playground pals at the school”I am sure that the scheme will continue for many years to thanks to the school, ChildLine, and most importantly, the children themselves.”

School liaison officer PC Chris Perkins added: “It’s fantastic to see pupils working together like this. It’s great teamwork and it also links in with so many of the positive messages North Wales Police school liaison work encourages.”
