Anglesey Walk – Helping Anglesey’s vulnerable young people.

The High Sheriff of Anglesey and Gwynedd, Professor Robin Grove-White, will be walking the entire 125-mile Anglesey Coastal Footpath on 15 consecutive days between 17th and 31st March.

To take part in The Walk click on the MAP & GROUP WALKS with dates for the open walks.

Please join the High Sheriff at the following open EVENTS on The Walk.

Click here for the Sheriff’s DAILY SCHEDULE which will be showing this progress during The Walk.

The Walk English.pdf

His purpose is to raise funds and increase publicity in support of Anglesey’s vulnerable young people. He asks for your help.

Our communities face a growing problem. Around 24 per cent of Anglesey’s young people between the ages of 16 and 24, often without training or work experience, are unemployed. They need fresh opportunities, activities and encouragement at a time of mounting economic pressure across Wales.

This affects us all. The island’s harmony and social order are at stake, as well as the needs of the young people themselves.

The funds that The Walk raises will help the county’s voluntary organisations provide more opportunities for work experience, confidence-building activities and other practical initiatives. It’s time for all of us on Anglesey to contribute and share the responsibility. The matter’s too serious to be left to the authorities alone, at a time when their own budgets are shrinking.

With expert advice, the High Sheriff’s charity, Crimebeat, will allocate the funds raised to the local charities and other innovative bodies that really understand the issues through their hands-on experience.

A group of youngsters from Prestatyn who gave the grounds of a local Church a new lease of life did so with financial backing from Crimebeat.

Members of Clwb Hwyl Hwyr (the Late Fun Club), a youth club run through the medium of Welsh, was awarded £215 for the ‘Hon yw ein bro’/ This is our community’ project by the High Sheriffs Crimebeat fund.

Under the project, new life was breathed into the garden of the Nant Hall Church as volunteers, youngsters and church members took part in gardening and also re-vamped the area with new plants and pots. The outside of the church also benefited from a fresh coat of paint to the front doors and signage.

The overall aim of the project, which was born from discussions with the children, was to provide a platform for the young people accessing the Clwb Hwyl Hwyr to learn more about their community and to think of ways of improving it.

The project also sought to bring a sense of responsibility and ownership for the young people as they knew that the work would benefit the community.

The youngsters and volunteers worked alongside church members on a ‘workday’ where the individuals were split into two groups – one painting and the other working on the garden.

High Sheriff Lloyd FitzHugh recently visited the completed project. He said: “I was delighted to visit Clwb Hwyl Hwyr and commended the volunteers on the provision of the range of activities for, and the work done by the children of the Welsh speaking community around Prestatyn.”

A PRIMARY school recruited its own mini-army of anti-bully volunteers to “police” playtime breaks.

Dubbed the “playground pals”, 29 pupils at Ysgol Deganwy underwent months of special training from ChildLine to get the scheme up and running.

The mission of the youngsters, aged nine and 10, is to help make sure other pupils – from as young as four – enjoy a safe and happy play environment, free from bullying.

“It is all about encouraging friendship and playing together,” said the school’s head Dafydd Roberts, who staged a morning service to launch the playground pals project.

As well as support from ChildLine, with bi-lingual counselling centres in Swansea and Rhyl, it is being backed by Crimebeat and North Wales Police.

Mr Roberts added: “Their support has been paramount in helping us set up a project that will be ongoing and part of the schools anti-bullying strategy.

“The ‘pals’ are looking forward enthusiastically to their role in providing a safer, friendlier school environment at playtimes and lunchtime.”

ChildLine’s Hannah Mart said”Making sure children are safe is at the heart of our work and the Playground Pals is a great way of making sure children can ask for help if they need it.”

The pupils were handed a pounds 500 Crimebeat grant to help them cover the costs of the scheme.

Dave Evans of Crimebeat said: “We are delighted to be able to support such a worthwhile scheme, and it is wonderful to see so many positive playground pals at the school”I am sure that the scheme will continue for many years to thanks to the school, ChildLine, and most importantly, the children themselves.”

School liaison officer PC Chris Perkins added: “It’s fantastic to see pupils working together like this. It’s great teamwork and it also links in with so many of the positive messages North Wales Police school liaison work encourages.”

A GROUP of young offenders are helping to put a stop to crimes against the elderly.

They are making special doorstops that will act as an extra line of defence for people’s homes in Conwy and Denbighshire.

The initiative has been launched by North Wales Probation Area in conjunction with Community Justice Interventions Wales (CJIW) and the Youth Justice Service.

The doorstops project has been given a kick start thanks to £500 from the Crimebeat fund of the High Sheriff of Clwyd, Henry Robertson.

He said: “I think it’s fantastic. It’s particularly good because not only is it helping people in the community who may find it a little bit difficult to help themselves because of age or circumstance but it’s also inducing the idea among young people to have some vocational skill which translates into helping the community.”

David Brown, a development officer for CJIW, is masterminding the project which involves young people aged between 16 and 18.

He was keen to pay tribute to businessman Paul Simmons who had made the scheme possible by allowing them to use his unit on the HTM industrial estate at Rhuddlan free of charge.

“We teach young people skills and they can achieve Open College Network qualifications in woodwork, health, safety and first aid.

“We are trying to involve them in the design.

“It’s a great way for young offenders to give something back to the community.

“The idea is that you put the wedge behind the door of anybody who needs protection – elderly, disabled or vulnerable people.

“If somebody pushes the door and the safety chain breaks, the door jams on the wedge and it can’t go any further, it’s locked solid. And the only way to release the door is to close it.

“In Conwy county, we will be distributing the doorstoppers in an area that is vulnerable to flooding and they are going to have the Floodline number on as well,” he explained.

Pupils from Llanddulas and Llysfaen have been busy getting creative – designing posters for a new community safety calendar.

Youngsters from Ysgol Cynfran, Ysgol Tan Y Marian and Ysgol Llanddulas have been putting colouring pens to paper for a competition launched by Police Community Support Officer Niki Lodge. All school aged children between 3 and 11 years in the area are being invited to design a poster complete with corresponding safety message for a unique 2012 calendar.

“Each month will have a specific safety message,” said PCSO Lodge, “and we want the children to not only draw a great picture but also one that relays the specific safety or crime prevention message too.”

The competition was recently launched and this week, pupils at Ysgol Cynfran and representatives from Ysgol Tan Y Marian and Ysgol Llanddulas got to meet special guest High Sheriff of Clwyd Lloyd FitzHugh who paid a visit to see and learn for himself just how well pupils were getting on with their task.

The High Sheriff was also treated to a tour of Ysgol Cynfran and learnt first hand about the school from some of its pupils. Before the visit was over, the High Sheriff, along with PCSO Niki Lodge, PC Ann Westwood and Melanie Lawton of the Arson Reduction team got to sit down with the youngsters from the three schools and see their ideas for pictures taking shape.

“There will be twelve winners in all, who will be chosen from the three schools,” explained PCSO Lodge. “Each school has been given four out of the 12 topics chosen so the winners will be separated equally between the three schools.”

The topics listed to feature in the calendar are: Road safety, Bonfire night, Halloween, Home safety at Christmas time, Vehicle safety, Anti-social behaviour, Woodland safety, Bullying, Stranger danger, Dog fouling and littering, Rogue Traders and Be Bright Be Seen.

Funding for the production of the calendars has been awarded from the High Sheriffs Charity Crimebeat, which donated £400, Conwy Community Safety donated £100, and a further £250 was received from the Arson Reduction Team.

Once the closing date ends and the winners chosen, the community safety calendars complete with the winning designs will go to print. Thanks to the funding given, each pupil from the three schools will receive a copy as a present. Additional copies will be issued to the elderly within the local community.

Melanie Lawton said: “The Arson Reduction Team is pleased to be working with North Wales Police on this worthwhile project. We are happy to support anything that reduces crime and that makes young people fell safer in their environment.”

Speaking about his visit High Sheriff of Clwyd, Lloyd FitzHugh said: “Ysgol Cynfran is a really vibrant school with a strong community feel about it. The pupils are full of enthusiasm and the members of the school council clearly enjoyed showing me around. I was particularly impressed with the link that has been made with the school in India.”

A DVD of a play by local students highlighting the consequences of sexual violence among the young has premiered at Prestatyn’s Scala cinema and arts centre.

Sweet Dreams was written and performed by six drama students from Ysgol Emrys Ap Iwan in Abergele.

It was put together to launch the Sexual Assault Referral Centre (Sarc) in north Wales earlier this year.

But it is hoped the DVD can also be used as an educational tool.

“We worked closely with the students to produce a drama around the issue of sexual violence amongst young people,” said Michelle Davidson Beck, domestic abuse lead officer for Conwy and Denbighshire community safety.

“The focus is on consequences and outcomes of non-consensual relationships, both for the perpetrator and victim,” she added.

‘Lot of fun’

The work is fictional, but the issues dealt with were a “major” issue for young people in “our very own locality”, she said.

The DVD will now be used in schools to raise awareness of the issue of consent, she added.

Funding of £572 from the High Sheriff’s Crimebeat fund made it possible to film the play and put it on DVD.

Katy Bennett, was one of the sixth formers who helped write the play. She also played both narrator and the victim’s mum in the production.

“We had a lot of fun making the DVD and putting the drama together, but it was quite stressful at times,” she said.

‘Very impactive’

“We spent a day filming and at the time we had no concept of what it was going to look like.

“I was really impressed, particularly with the editing,” she added.

The drama was written with the help of Kevin Jones, head of drama at Ysgol Emrys ap Iwan with guidance and information from the police, the charity NSPCC, and the Crown Prosecution Service.

He said the project was used as part of the students’ A-Level course work.

Supt Richard Brough, from North Wales Police, who was at the premiere, called the play “very impactive”.

“Rape and sexual offences are very serious crimes,” he said.

“In 97% of all cases the victim and the offender are known to each other,” he added.

He said the Criminal Justice System had become “more professional” in the way victims and offenders are dealt with.

Part of this was the Sarc centre opened earlier this year, he added.

“However, where we really want to be is preventing these offences happening in the first place,” he said.

“The issue of consent is a very difficult message to get across and this DVD, which is both entertaining and powerful, will greatly assist us.”
