High Sheriff visits Ysgol Waunfawr

A project to promote intergenerational working with a Caernarfon primary school is underway thanks to the efforts of the Police Community Safety Department and Crimebeat.

Pupils from Ysgol Waunafwr recently received funding from Crimebeat – an initiative of the High Sheriff which was launched back in 2002 to help young people to develop projects to prevent and reduce crime so as to make their community a safer place to live.

Working with the Police Community Safety Department and local Neighbourhood Policing Team, the pupils have implemented a new project whereby they have been given crime reduction packs and equipment to mark their property, as well as their parents and grandparents.

Yesterday (Friday, 26th February), the High Sheriff, Mr Norman Corbett visited the school to meet the pupils who are involved with the initiative.

PCSO Norman Hughes from the Community Safety Team said: “Each pupil received a crime reduction pack which included property marking pens which were bought using the funding from Crimebeat.

“The aim of the project was to promote intergenerational working and to encourage young people to assist their local officers with crime prevention/reduction initiatives.

He added: “In turn, it will foster good a relationship between the Police and the young people within the community which will be of future benefit to all.”

Gwynedd Community Safety Partnership also funded bi-lingual window stickers, which clearly state that all property within the location have been security marked, so as to discourage any potential thieves. The window stickers also carry a message for householders to be wary of bogus callers.

PCSO Hughes added: “The pupils were thrilled to be given the opportunity to meet the High Sheriff, Mr Norman Corbett to tell him all about their project.

“This is an excellent example of partnership working in the community and we very much look forward to working with the school again in the near future.”

The project has been nominated for the High Sheriff award and a presentation evening will take place at the Court Building Caernarfon on Wednesday evening the 10th of March.
