A number of young people across the Bangor region have been given the opportunity to participate in a unique outdoor experience this summer.
With the assistance of Crimebeat funding in the value of £1,000, the Wild in the Woods project has been able to teach youths valuable skills required in the woodland. In addition, the young people are encouraged to develop their own self-confidence through making friends and by working as part of a team.
The project which worked with young people from the age of eight-years-old, ran from late July and throughout August, lasting for three days at a time.
During these three day periods, the Wild in the Woods project provided young people with the chance to learn a variety of outdoor skills, from campfire cooking, den building, bushcraft techniques and wildlife identification.
One of the biggest barriers for children to get on the programme is the cost itself, and with the aid of financial support from the High Sheriff’s Crimebeat Fund, numerous young people have been able to take part in these educational activities.
The summer project has received a great response from parents that have benefitted from the service, and have said that it offers opportunities for the children to get out, meet new people and learn new skills.
By offering young people the opportunity to get involved in new activities like the Wild in the Woods project, it is hoped that they will be deferred from taking part in any potential anti-social behaviour in the community.
High Sheriff of Gwynedd, Dr Peter Harlech Jones, took the opportunity to visit the project and see for himself the impact these activities were having on the young people attending. He even got the chance to try his hand at archery with the group.

Gyda chymorth £1,000 o arian Trechu Trosedd, bu modd i’r prosiect Gwyllt yn y Coed ddysgu sgiliau pwysig i bobl ifanc – y math o sgiliau sydd eu hangen i oroesi mewn coedwig. Yn bwysicach na dim mae’r prosiect yn helpu i ddatblygu eu hunan hyder pobl ifanc drwy iddynt wneud ffrindiau newydd a gweithio fel rhan o dîm.
Roedd y prosiect, sydd ar gyfer pobl ifanc o wyth oed i fyny, yn rhedeg o ddiwedd mis Gorffennaf drwy gydol mis Awst am gyfnodau o dri diwrnod ar y tro.
Yn ystod y dyddiau hyn roedd y prosiect yn rhoi cyfle i bobl ifanc ddysgu amrywiaeth o sgiliau, o goginio uwchben tân, adeiladu lloches, byw yn yr awyr agored ac adnabod bywyd gwyllt.
Y prif beth sy’n rhwystro plant rhag cael mynediad i’r rhaglen yw’r gost ond gyda chymorth ariannol Cronfa Trechu Trosedd yr Uchel Siryf mae llawer o bobl ifanc wedi gallu cymryd rhan yn y gweithgareddau addysgol hyn.
Mae prosiect yr haf wedi cael ymateb gwych gan rieni plant sydd wedi gallu manteisio ar y profiad – maen nhw’n dweud ei fod yn cynnig cyfleoedd i’w plant fynd allan, cyfarfod pobl newydd a dysgu sgiliau newydd.
Drwy gynnig cyfleodd i bobl ifanc gymryd rhan mewn gweithgareddau newydd fel y cynllun Gwyllt yn y Coed, y gobaith yw y bydd modd eu dargyfeirio rhag cymryd rhan mewn ymddygiad gwrthgymdeithasol yn y gymuned.
Manteisiodd Uchel Siryf Gwynedd, Dr Peter Harlech Jones, ar y cyfle i ymweld â’r prosiect a gweld droso’i hun yr effaith cadarnhaol yr oedd y gweithgareddau yn eu cael ar y bobl ifanc – cafodd hyd yn oed gyfle i droi ei law at saethyddiaeth gyda’r grŵp.
