A group of secondary school children from the village of Pentraeth in Anglesey have been using their summer holidays to learn and develop new skills. The local Neighbourhood Policing Team has identified this time of year to be prone to a rise in anti-social behaviour and criminal damage, so have launched the Pentraeth Diversionary Project.
Police officers have introduced this project into the community in order for youths to be discouraged from taking part in any form of criminal activity. It also exists to address the common problem of young people not having anything to do in their free time during the school holidays.
Local members of the community had previously been reporting incidents of anti-social behaviour from
youths, to officers at open police surgeries. This has shown a divide in the community between age groups, and the project also aims to reduce any negativity shown towards youths.
A ‘Pentraeth Clean-up Day’ was organised alongside the Anglesey council and Keep Wales Tidy campaign. Young people pulled on their overalls to participate in a litter pick around the village and built flower boxes with elder members of the community.
Therefore, with the support of a grant of £500 from the High Sheriff’s Crimebeat fund, young people from the Pentraeth area have been able to engage their interests into worthwhile activities.
On offer for the youth group were valuable lessons for CV building, such as first aid training from the Red
Cross and self-defence classes provided by Zanshin Karate Cymru. North Wales Fire and Rescue Service also delivered their one-day ‘Phoenix project’, which educates young people about the consequences of deliberate fire setting.
As a reward for their attendance, youths have been treated to a trip to the Glaslyn Park in Pwllheli, where they have been able to take part in fun activities, such as go-karting and kayaking.
The High Sheriff of Gwynedd, Dr Peter Harlech Jones, was delighted to have the opportunity to attend one of the days and got involved with the young people in a community litter pick and building planters for pensioners’ bungalows.

Mae grŵp o ddisgyblion ysgol uwchradd o bentref Pentraeth yn Ynys Môn wedi bod yn defnyddio gwyliau’r haf i ddysgu a datblygu sgiliau newydd. Mae’r Tîm Plismona’r Gymdogaeth lleol wedi adnabod bod cynnydd yn digwydd mewn ymddygiad gwrthgymdeithasol a difrod troseddol yn ystod yr adeg hon o’r flwyddyn, ac felly maent wedi lansio Prosiect Dargyfeiriol Pentraeth.
Mae Swyddogion Heddlu wedi cyflwyno’r prosiect hwn i’r gymuned er mwyn ceisio annog pobl ifanc i beidio â chymryd rhan mewn unrhyw fath o weithgaredd troseddol. Hefyd mae’n ceisio taclo’r broblem gyffredin nad oes gan bobl ifanc unrhyw beth i’w wneud gyda’u hamser sbâr yn ystod gwyliau’r ysgol.
Yn flaenorol roedd aelodau o’r gymuned wedi bod yn dweud wrth swyddogion yng nghymorthfeydd yr heddlu bod pobl ifanc yn ymddwyn yn wrthgymdeithasol. Mae hyn wedi achosi rhaniad yn y gymuned rhwng pobl o oedran gwahanol, a nod y prosiect hefyd oedd lleihau unrhyw negatifedd tuag at bobl ifanc.
Cafodd ‘Diwrnod Glanhau Pentraeth ‘ei drefnu ar y cyd â Chyngor Sir Ynys Môn a Chadwch Gymru’n Daclus. Mi wnaeth y bobl ifanc wisgo eu hoferôls a chymryd rhan mewn sesiwn casglu sbwriel o gwmpas y pentref ac mi wnaethant roi bocsys blodau gyda’i gilydd gydag aelodau hŷn o’r gymuned.
Felly, gyda chefnogaeth grant o £500 gan Gronfa Trechu Trosedd yr Uchel Siryf, mae pobl ifanc o ardal Pentraeth wedi gallu troi eu diddordebau i mewn i weithgareddau gwerth chweil.
Cafodd y bobl ifanc nifer o wersi gwerthfawr ar gyfer eu CV, megis hyfforddiant cymorth cyntaf gan y Groes Goch a dosbarthiadau hunanamddiffyn a ddarparwyd gan Zanshin Karate Cymru. Hefyd mi wnaeth Gwasanaeth Tân ac Achub Gogledd Cymru gynnal eu prosiect Ffenics un diwrnod, sy’n addysgu pobl ifanc am ganlyniadau cynnau tanau’n fwriadol.
Fel gwobr am fynychu’r gweithgareddau, cafodd y bobl ifanc drip i Barc Glaslyn ym Mhwllheli, lle cawsant gymryd rhan mewn gweithgareddau hwyliog fel cartio a chaiaco.
Roedd Uchel Siryf Gwynedd, Dr Peter Harlech Jones, wrth ei fodd o’r cyfle i fynychu un o’r diwrnodau ac mi wnaeth gymryd rhan yn y sesiwn casglu sbwriel cymunedol gyda’r bobl ifanc a rhoi potiau blodau at ei gilydd ar gyfer byngalos trigolion hŷn y gymuned.
